THE CORFF VOICE ACCENT METHOD

BOB CORFF TOP VOCAL COACH created THIS so that the performer can:

Because BOB & CLAIRE CORFF were at one time actors themselves often auditioning for parts that called for foreign accents, they have experienced first hand the pressures of having to know an accent within a day or two or less. They were both fortunate enough to be cast in many of the parts they auditioned for. Between the two of them, they had the opportunity to play people from Scotland, England, Poland, Sweden, Germany, Austria, Ireland, New York, Alabama, New Orleans, Texas, Oklahoma and, yes, believe it or not, even Japan.

As teachers they realize that even when actors have qualities needed to get an accent, (a good ear, the ability to duplicate sound, the openness of a child and the willingness to feel foolish) actors very often don’t have the time to search out a film with that particular accent to listen to and repeat after or the luxury of finding a book and then figuring out those very foreign phonetic symbols that can be extremely confusing.

The CORFFS have put these accent programs together in order for you to be able to obtain “the advantage” by listening and copying an authentic accent. These programs are complete, giving you the most important sounds you need to learn and short cuts that can help you with the sound, such as the attitude of the region and the point of view of a country. BOB & CLAIRE CORFF’S goal is for you to have an accent with speed, precision and authenticity.

TOP VOCAL COACH Bob Corff Biography

TOP CELEBRITY VOCAL COACH Bob Corff knows first-hand that what a person says is not as important as how it is said. As top vocal coach to thousands of such big-name stars as Vanessa Redgrave and Samuel L. Jackson, business leaders and public speakers, Corff has made a definite impact on their careers and their lives.

"Enriching your voice alters the way you feel about yourself and the way people respond to you," Corff says.

In an age which emphasizes personal development and competitiveness in the workplace, it surprises Corff how many public figures and business people are not aware of the importance of having an effective voice.

"In this society, many seem apologetic--their voices are high and they talk as if every statement is a question," Corff says. "This type of speech pattern denotes self-doubt."

Corff says voice is the purest representation of a person, revealing levels of self-confidence, expectations and attitudes. He claims voice is one of the first and most powerful characteristics people respond to--a strong and self-assured voice commanding attention and respect.

Corff mastered his voice coaching techniques during a long-lived acting career. The actor/singer played lead roles in many acclaimed stage productions including Jesus in "Jesus Christ Superstar" and Danny Zuko in Broadway's production of "Grease."

Born in Reading, PA. to an encyclopedia salesman, Corff had no ties to the entertainment industry. However, the family migrated west and Corff spent much of his childhood in California. Here he realized his calling to the stage, and like so many college-age students, started a rock-and-roll band. After one rehearsal in a friend's garage, "The Purple Gang" appeared at the grand opening of a local service station, which led to a contract with MGM records.

Soon thereafter, Corff studied theater and landed his first acting job as the lead in the Los Angeles production of "Hair"--a role he later played on Broadway. Corff has since starred in more than 103 episodes of "Everyday Show," and under contract to Universal Studios, played parts in many television series and movies such as: “McMillan & Wife,”“The Bold Ones,” and a movie of the week titled “Houston, We’ve Got a Problem.”

Bob starred in a Roger Corman cult classic film “Gasss.” He worked personally with Leonard Bernstein in “Mass.” That was one of the 3 plays Bob did at the prestigious Mark Taper Theatre in Los Angeles. Also, Brian Friel’s “Christal & Fox” and “The Dybbuk.”

Corff was 12 years into his acting career when the 1980's actor's strike hit. While his co-workers remained unemployed, Corff embarked upon a new venture. When a friend asked him to teach her to sing, he had no idea he was to become a prominent and much-sought-after vocal coach. Word of Corff's coaching talents spread quickly and his student roster flourished. Corff now has an extensive and impressive client list which includes Sally Field, Elijah Wood, Jennifer Aniston, Antonio Bandaras and others.

Corff enjoys working with film and recording stars because they know exactly why they are in his studio.

"They have a job to do and they use me to do it, Corff says. Corff's clients are his most powerful advocates. By making them more marketable in the work force, he incites a positive transformation in their world.

Corff hopes that someday more people will learn the value of having a good voice. He feels that developing an effective voice is as important as developing a toned and healthy body. So corporate leaders, business professionals, performers and politicians, listen carefully, watch the lips and repeat..."The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain."

BOB CORFF TOP CELEBRITY VOICE COACH REVEALS SECRETS
OF CREATING A DRAMATICALLY DYNAMIC VOICE

Actors can now learn the same voice techniques taught privately to top stars by celebrity voice coach Bob Corff through a audio course he is releasing for the first time.

Now all performers can improve their voice by using Corff's "Voice Method" course previously available exclusively to such students as Amy Irving, Ted Danson and Heather Locklear.

Following the voice techniques revealed on this course, stage actors can learn to project their voice and achieve a dynamic and effective vocal quality. Film and television performers can acquire a powerfully smooth speaking voice and enhance vocal flexibility, opening doors to roles for which they might otherwise have been overlooked. Singers can improve their musicality and gain strength, range and stamina.

"Practicing the exercises revealed on the course for three weeks daily will make a striking improvement in any actor's or singer's voice," Corff says. "This can have as dramatic an affect on their performance and confidence as having a face lift."

With Hollywood, New York and London housing such an abundance of talented performers hoping to make it big, producers and directors must look for that special someone whose qualities are a notch above the rest.

The very talented Hank Azaria, star & producer of “Huff” on Showtime said, “Bob, thank you for working with me on ‘Along Came Polly.’ I got a great response. It’s always a pleasure working with you.”

Many of Corff’s students say their voice is responsible for a lot of their achievements.

Corff often works with actors to perfect their voice for specific roles. Vanessa Redgrave went to Corff to lower her pitch to sound like a man for the movie "Second Serve." Jonathan T. Thomas needed to work on clarity for his role as the lion cub in Disney's "Lion King." Alan Campbell worked with Corff to prepare the audition for the demanding lead role in "Sunset Blvd." and relied on his training throughout the production to keep his voice in shape.

As Corff teaches in his private lessons, the course covers such basics as breathing techniques and how the voice works. He proceeds to reveal advanced methods of voice control and exercises aimed at specific areas typically in need of improvement.

From his many years on stage, Corff knows first-hand what having a good voice means to performers. From playing Jesus in "Jesus Christ Superstar," to playing Danny Zuko in Broadway's production of "Grease," Corff knows the demands the performer faces with each production. That is why so many of his students believe his Voice Method course is a vital tool in helping the artist become that special someone the directors are looking for.

BOB CORFF: VOICE COACH TO THE STARS

It is my pleasure to share with you an interview with an amazing, warm hearted man that is sought after by major motion picture and television production teams to help coach and bring out the beautiful voices that we hear on the silver screen.

Bob Corff has been in the entertainment world for many years and is no stranger to being on the screen himself. In fact, Corff mastered his voice coaching techniques during a long-lived acting career, he played lead roles in many acclaimed stage productions including Jesus in "Jesus Christ Superstar", Danny Zuko in Broadway's production of "Grease" and was the lead in the Los Angeles production of "Hair". He was in many television series and movies such as:

"McMillan & Wife", "The Bold Ones" and starred in the Roger Corman cult classic film "Gasss".

Bob Corff knows first-hand that what a person says is not as important as how it is said. As top vocal coach to thousands of such big-name stars as Vanessa Redgrave, Jodi Foster, Samuel L. Jackson, Jennifer Aniston, William H. Macy, Cate Blanchett, as well as business leaders and public speakers, Bob Corff has made a definite impact on their careers and their lives.

Enriching your voice alters the way you feel about yourself and the way people respond to you, Corff says. In an age which emphasizes personal development and competitiveness in the workplace, it surprises Corff how many public figures and business people are not aware of the importance of having an effective voice.

Bob Corff is a prominent and much-sought-after vocal coach and shares with you the tips he shares with his famous clients in acheiving your true voice, the voice that commands respect and will make people take notice of who you are and what you have to share.

MORE ON VOCAL COACHING BY OTHER SOURCES TO READ:

What is vocal coaching?

Although the title of vocal coach is a widely used term, there still is much confusion about what the vocal coach actually does. Usually when I tell people I am a vocal coach, they assume I am either a singer or a teacher of singing. When I explain I am a pianist who works with singers, the response is often, "So what do you do?" The usual reply is that I work on all aspects of singing except vocal technique, which is the realm of the voice teacher.

The most important thing a vocal coach must do is listen. This seems almost too obvious to mention, but it is too vital not to. Intense listening is crucial, since the coach is expected not only to play along with the singer, but also provide feedback--to tell the singer what he hears: what is good, what needs improvement. Sometimes a coach may be able to work with a voice/piano duo. More often, however, a vocal coaching will include only the singer and the coach. I will use this as the norm for the sake of this article.

This brings up one key difference between a collaborative pianist and a vocal coach. Frequently, these two jobs are performed by one person, Out they are two separate roles. When performing with a singer, the collaborative pianist must, of course, listen to the singer for matters of ensemble, balance and interpretation. However, much of the collaborative pianist's attention must necessarily be focused on what she is doing at the piano, since she is one of the performers. When that same pianist serves as a vocal coach, however, she must focus her attention chiefly on the singer. This often is difficult for those of us who have been trained for many years to listen to ourselves and the sounds we make at the keyboard. However, the coach can better help the singer by listening rather than playing the piano part exquisitely. Naturally, I'm not advocating that the pianist play poorly, or that she not care about her playing; it's simply a shift in the focus of attention. In fact, it is a great advantage if the coach is an excellent pianist, since she must be able to play the piano part and sometimes sing cues (in operatic and oratorio repertoire), while still focusing her attention on what the singer is doing.

The coach must pay attention to a wide array of vocal and musical issues. The basic musical elements the coach must listen for include correct pitches, rhythms and words. Presumably, these all have been learned before the singer meets with the coach, but that does not always happen. Even if the singer has done his homework, he may have learned something inaccurately, or perhaps he has not yet had an opportunity to sing his part with the instrumental part. Then, to go a step further, are the correct, pitches in tune? Are the rhythms truly accurate, and do they give the music life, or are they only metronomic? Are the words not only correct, but also pronounced accurately and clearly, and are they inflected appropriately and expressively?

Suddenly, we have delved into deeper territory with the inclusion of language. Vocal repertoire comes in many languages, and the vocal coach is expected to be able to work with at least four: English, French, German and Italian. Linguistic areas in which the coach may be helpful to the singer include diction (the correct choice of vowel and consonant sounds, suitably produced), what is sometimes called the "lilt" of the language (how the language is inflected; how it flows; which syllables, if any, should be stressed and how they should be stressed), translation of the text (if it is in a language foreign to the singer) and interpretation of the text (figuring out what the poem--or prose--really means).

This is one of the most rewarding activities for many coaches, especially when they are working on the marvelously rich and varied art-song repertoire. As coach and singer discuss the poetry of songs, they can discover various levels of meanings in the poems. What was the poet trying to express? Judging from the music, what did the composer think the poem was about? What can the poem and the song mean to you or your audience? These can be stimulating and gratifying questions to explore together.

Does this mean the coach has to be fluent in all those major song and opera languages? It certainly would be useful if he was, but it is not necessary. What he should have is knowledge of the rules of diction; a basic understanding of grammar, since that is often a key to translating; a love of language and poetry; and good dictionaries. He also should constantly be developing an ear for the cadence and inflection of the languages. And once a coach's basic languages are in pretty good shape, he may want to add Spanish or Russian or Swedish or Czech or....

Another important role for the vocal coach is to help the singer achieve a finer grasp of musical style, which could include discussing performance practices of specific eras, such as baroque ornamentation; style characteristics of certain genres, like verismo opera; and compositional traits of specific composers.
